Most employees gain extensive hands-on experience over the years without earning formal certifications that validate their industry skills. That’s a real problem for employers. Not due to their performance, but of what it means for their career path, the credibility of your organisation, and compliance needs in specific industries.

That’s exactly why employers need Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) for their staff. It’s a formal assessment process that transforms your real work experience into an industry-accredited qualification. Also, for an entrepreneur or an employer, it’s important to have a clear awareness of how it works and the benefits it brings to your team.

What RPL Application and Credit Transfer Mean for Your Organisation

RPL or Recognition of Prior Learning is a thorough assessment process awarded by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) like Churchill Education. Here, the provider assesses prior learning, experience, and relevant skills against the qualification benchmarks. If your experience and evidence meet the eligibility standards, you might receive credit for specific units or be awarded the full qualification.

There are quite a few reasons why this is important for employers:

  • Your experienced team can achieve formal qualifications in just 14 days, without disrupting their operational responsibilities.
  • Qualifications issued for prior recognition of learning are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). This indicates that they carry the same importance as any conventionally earned credential.
  • Diploma of Project Management (BSB50820)

Which Industries Use RPL?

Major industries across Australia today are inclined towards making strong RPL decisions. Churchill Education works in accordance with employers and employees across diverse industries.

  • Primary ones include:
  • Defence
  • Mining
  • Infrastructure
  • Public sector
  • Business and corporate services
  • Police
  • Emergency services
  • Construction
  • Healthcare and aged care
  • Hospitality and tourism
  • Manufacturing

These sectors are mainly where employees develop their real-world skills before earning formal credentials and competencies.

For example, a site manager in the construction or infrastructure industry with a decade of experience operating large-scale projects might work at an Advanced Diploma level in practice. However, without a note or a piece of paper to prove it. RPL supports academic achievement while closing the gap by identifying skills achieved through earlier study, employment, or real-life experience when they meet the qualification.

Likewise, in the mining sector, safety and other operational roles demand a high level of skill that is not always reflected in an employee’s translated documents. So, getting those trade skills and other expertise recognised formally is important. This supports compliance, procurement tendering, and professional confidence.

Why Employers Use RPL to Meet Compliance and Tendering Requirements

A demonstrable qualification is required in most industries, jobs, government roles, and corporate contracts. If you submit a tender, respond to an RFT, or operate across a regulated setting, a team of highly experienced formally unqualified staff can affect your business’s bottom line.

RPL frames a practical route to address this challenge. Instead of enrolling your team in training programs that might take years or months to complete, RPL enables them to achieve relevant qualifications in a matter of weeks.

RPL qualifications for compliance and tendering include:

How Does the RPL Process Work for Employers?

One of the rising concerns for employers today is the operational impact and loss of productivity. Luckily, RPL needs very little time away from work. So, this is how it works:

Free Appraisal to Assess Prior Learning

Your employee will complete a short appraisal with a Churchill Education advisor. The normal turnaround time is around 20 minutes. During this timeframe, they would confirm the eligibility of qualifications suited to students based on their industry experience and knowledge. This critical initial assessment determines their eligibility and the right RPL application process before the actual course begins.

Evidence Submission or Certified Copies

A secure online system is used to submit supporting evidence and documents. This ensures the whole process remains organised, transparent, and easy to track.

Certified copies of documents are often required to verify the authenticity of the information provided during the assessment process. These may be checked against original records for compliance with industry standards.

Assessment for Trade Skills

Churchill’s assessors use the RPL assessment for evaluating prior study and demonstrate that their submission process aligns with the learning outcomes of the qualifications. The turnaround is typically three to seven business days.

Qualification Issued for Domestic & International Applicants

Once the evidence is aligned with the requirements, the qualification is initially issued via the digital route and then by post. The entire process is finished within 14 days.

It’s  also important for students to get their credit transfer or RPL applications submitted before the study commences.

Additionally, employers might also be asked to provide a letter of reference or have a supervisor confirm the employee’s role in the company. This is where you actively need to take part.

Can Employers Sponsor Prior Recognition of Learning for Their Staff?

Absolutely! Most businesses fund RPL as part of their broader initiatives for professional development or staff retention. Compared with enrolling staff in full qualifications, this is a low-cost route that yields the same outcomes.

This naturally leads to a strong focus on employee engagement. Staff eligible for employer support for professional development are destined for long-term association with the company. So, assisting your team in formalising skills they have already built sends a clear message. That is, we value what to add to this organisation.

RPL Quality, Standards, and Training Providers

Employers often ask, “How rigorous is RPL really?” RPL is a detailed process that is taken seriously and involves assessment of skills and experience.

Qualifications issued through RPL are nationally recognised under the AQF. They are regulated by ASQA (the Australian Skills Quality Authority). RTOs providing RPL should comply with the Standards for RTOs 2015. This is the same framework that governs all Australian vocational education and training.

Since 2006, Churchill Education has been operating under RTO No. 31430. We have issued more than 31,000 qualifications carrying over 340 five-star Google reviews. This track record gives employers confidence in the outcomes their staff will receive.

RPL is no longer a shortcut or a workaround. It’s an authentic, assessor-reviewed process that confirms an individual’s competence and ensures their skills are recognised against defined qualification standards. There are specific evidence requirements and an extensive assessment.

Can an employer initiate RPL on behalf of an employee?

Yes, employers can initiate the RPL process on behalf of an employee. They can support the application by providing relevant employment records, verifying experiences, and funding the enrolment, where applicable.

Absolutely. RPL qualifications under the Australian Qualifications Framework are recognised similarly to other accredited credentials. This formal recognition supports transfer credit in higher education and VET. This includes advanced standing in University courses. In VET, transfer credit might cover less than 100% of a qualification, whereas in higher education, credit values vary by policy.

Whenever the experience is partial, advanced standing or credit, including transfer credit, is often granted, eliminating the need for training. RPL might involve assessing prior learning for maximum credit during an appraisal that determines the remaining units required for the qualification.

Not necessarily. RPL acknowledges informal learning and non-formal learning for skills recognised beyond training. Submissions and evidence are often completed outside of work, with the assessment handled by the provider or institution. Students complete the process without any disruption, reducing remaining units in the course.
