Recognition of Prior Learning – What’s worse than not having the right credentials on your resume?

The Right Credentials

Lately, there's been some reports in the media of a well-known retailer finding out that the newest member of their leadership team had lied about his experience to land the job.

In a way, it's understandable, when you want the job, but know there are gaps in your resume, it can be tempting to add in experience or skills you know you don't have, but's it's never a good idea.

Particularly if you're going for jobs within the same industry, it's easier than you think for employers to check on your employment history, and get to the bottom of any skills or experience listed that doesn't add up.

What can I do if I have gaps in my CV?

No doubt if you're applying for promotion or higher level roles within your industry, your potential employer will have connections in that industry, and will be able to look into the experience you have listed and verify if it's the real deal, so rather than padding your resume with experience or skills you don't have, look at ways you can add real value to your CV.

This can be as simple as looking into gaining nationally recognised qualifications and using recognition of prior learning to make the most of your existing experience.

Get qualified

It's hard to ignore real qualifications, and obtaining them can be quicker and easier than you think. If you have years of on-the-job experience and the only thing missing from your resume is the actual piece of paper that says you're qualified, gaining a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning may be the fastest and simplest route for you to take.
If you lack a bit of experience, but need that piece of paper to land the job, then studying for a qualification might suit you better.

Recognition of Prior Learning...? Studying? I don't have time for that.

It's true, both Recognition of Prior Learning and study can seem like time consuming and frustrating options when you want that new role sooner rather than later, that's why it pays to do your research before committing to anything.

A lot of Registered Training Organisations, TAFEs and universities can make Recognition of Prior Learning, or 'RPL' seem like a convoluted process, but gaining a qualification based on your experience alone needn't be.

At the same time, if you need to bolster your resume with a qualification through study, that doesn't have to mean conforming to a rigid and inflexible timetable set by your educational institution.

Trust me, there's a better way.
