The Skills AI Can’t Replace

These so-called ‘soft skills’ aren’t just nice-to-haves anymore — they’re career insurance policies. They’re the human advantages that will matter more than ever in a future shaped by technology.

When you’re 22, offering career advice feels a little strange. I get it. But I’ve got some insights regarding the skills AI can’t replace.

It’s usually something you’d expect to hear from someone with decades of experience under their belt — not someone still finding their feet in the working world.

But here’s the thing: the world I’m stepping into looks very different from the one many before me did. It’s faster. Less certain. And increasingly, it’s shaped by something none of us can fully predict — AI.

The Future of Working Alongside AI

The world they prepared me for in school? It doesn’t exist anymore.

They say my generation is likely to have seven careers across our working lives. Not seven jobs — seven entirely different careers. And when I look around, it’s not hard to see why.

Everywhere I turn, AI is there — quietly reshaping industries, roles, and expectations.

Sometimes, it’s in the small things: drafting meeting minutes, sorting spreadsheets, automating admin tasks. Honestly, I’m happy to hand some of those responsibilities over to my new digital helper.

Other times, it’s in the big things: job restructures, new industries emerging, and old ones quietly fading into history.

At times, it can feel like trying to build a house on shifting sand.

How do you plan a career when the very ground beneath you keeps moving?

How do you feel secure when even today’s ‘safe’ skills might not be tomorrow’s?

There was a time when all of this felt overwhelming — even a little frightening. But dwelling on uncertainty wasn’t going to get me anywhere.

The Skills AI Can’t Replace

Instead, I’ve decided to focus on what AI can’t replicate: the human skills that will always matter.

Sure, AI can crunch numbers faster than I ever could. Maybe one day, my Excel shortcuts won’t be quite as impressive as they are now.

But project management? Leadership? Building teams? Inspiring people? Those are skills no algorithm can replicate.

Recognising Human Skills

Empathy. Critical thinking. Creativity. Collaboration.

These so-called ‘soft skills’ aren’t just nice-to-haves anymore — they’re career insurance policies. They’re the human advantages that will matter more than ever in a future shaped by technology.

That’s why, even in the early days of my career, I’ve taken steps to futureproof myself.

Through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), I’ve formally acknowledged the leadership, project management, and real-world capabilities I’ve already built — the skills AI can’t replace.

Free Appraisal

Having those qualifications in hand doesn’t just recognise what I can already do; it means that when AI reshapes industry or the job market shifts — and it will — I’m ready.

I have tangible, recognised proof of the skills that will always be in demand.

I’m not pretending to have it all figured out. Far from it.

But I do know this: instead of trying to outpace technology, I’m focusing on what will outlast it.

Building Skills for the Future

I’m building leadership skills, not just technical expertise.

I’m strengthening communication and collaboration, not just learning the latest software.

And I’m practicing adaptability, because even the best-laid plans sometimes need a pivot.

The truth is, the shape of my career will change — probably more than once.

But if I stay anchored in the skills that machines can’t mimic, I’ll always find a way forward. Because no matter how clever AI becomes, it’s still people who will build the future.

And I plan to be one of them.

If you’ve got any career wisdom for a 22-year-old navigating the future of work, I’m all ears!
