RPL Evidence Requirements Explained

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) uses your real-world career experience as evidence for nationally recognised qualifications – no formal documents needed.

What is RPL Evidence?

Evidence is proof that you have the capabilities required to secure a qualification through RPL. It doesn’t have to be formal or academic. Good evidence simply allows you to achieve the qualifications to match the skills and knowledge you’ve already built throughout your career.

Key point:

RPL values your practical, hands-on experience. Our assessors recognise your real-world capability, not just certificates and transcripts.

Types of RPL Evidence Accepted

Direct Evidence

Evidence that directly demonstrates your skills, such as certificates, work samples, job descriptions, and in-person assessments.

Indirect Evidence

Third-party references or documentation that support your competency for specific qualifications. This may include employer testimonials or reference letters.

Supplementary Evidence

Any other evidence that showcases your work experience, like industry awards, training workshops, reports, or professional memberships.

Meeting the Rules of Submission

Any evidence can be submitted to secure a qualification through RPL as long as it’s authentic, reliable, current, and sufficiently demonstrates the required competencies.

Examples of Common RPL Evidence

Relevant RPL evidence should match the competencies needed to fulfil the requirements of each unit within your chosen qualification. Here are some examples of evidence that could be used to support your application.

Training certificates or workshop evidence
Work samples
Job descriptions or position statements
In-person assessments
Photos or videos of you completing work
Employer testimonials
Reference letters
Industry awards
Professional memberships
Payslips or invoices showing your contracts

What If You Don't Have Everything?

Firstly, don’t panic. You don’t need all RPL evidence ready upfront, and we don’t expect you to arrive with a perfect portfolio.

Here's what happens:

Begin your appraisal with our Career Advisors
Discuss your skills, experience, and goals
Our Advisors recommend any further evidence needed…
…or suggest a little more online gap training
We map your real-world evidence to nationally recognised qualifications

How Assessors Support the RPL Evidence Process

Free Appraisal

Explain your goals, current work experience, and provide a few easily accessible documents to an experienced RPL assessor.

Evidence Mapping

The assessor will explain exactly what evidence is needed to establish your competency, before matching this evidence to the qualification units.

Confirm Eligibility

You’ll then explore the qualifications you’re eligible for right now, and those you could achieve with a little more online gap training. All paperwork is then submitted to the government for you.

Create Your Portfolio

Once qualifications are confirmed, you’ll receive physical copies in the post and a secure, lifelong online folder to keep everything organised.
