Tracey Pelling's Advice to Others
Guidance from someone who's been there
“Back yourself, and keep your training records, position descriptions and work samples. No one’s going to keep the evidence of what you’ve done for you.
If I don’t put myself out there and ask for what I want, then how can I encourage or mentor someone else to do it?
Don’t underestimate or undervalue the skills that you get in the defence force or policing. They are competitive, and often better than many civilian qualifications.
You don’t need to start something from scratch. You just need to provide the required evidence to prove what you’ve already been doing.”
A Note for Women (and High Performers Holding Back):
“If a bloke ticks 20%, he applies. Women wait until it’s 80%.”
This is where careers stall. Not because of lack of ability, but lack of recognition.
Looking Back: Reflection and Summary
Tracey Pelling's final thoughts on their journey with Churchill Education
“I backed myself, and that’s what changed everything. Once my experience was recognised, the opportunities followed.”
– Tracey
Back Yourself Early
If you don’t put yourself forward, you limit your own progression.
Recognise Your Transferable Skills
Your experience across police, defence, and leadership is highly valuable in other industries.
Don’t Undervalue Your Capability
You’re likely more qualified than you think, even if it’s not reflected on paper yet.
Capture Your Evidence Now
Keep records of your roles and achievements so you can prove your experience when needed.
Avoid Starting Again
You’ve already built the skills. Get them recognised instead of repeating them.
