How Qualification Levels Work…

A question we often get asked is, ‘How do qualification levels work?’

It occurred to me that it’s really similar to strength training.

I’ve been showing up for strength training for the past three years, and over that time I’ve gained strength.

I didn’t start at the highest, heaviest weight.

There are a series of weights on every piece of equipment that start at the lightest end of the spectrum and work their way up progressively, incrementally.

In some things I started with just the bar, no weights at all… the bar was enough!

But over time, I have progressed through weights.

There’s more ahead, and more still that I could learn to use, but I’ve progressed through them to where I’m at today.

Your skills and knowledge in the workplace are similar…

When we first begin in our careers we don’t know much. We’ve got the basics, the bar, but weighing in with additional skills and knowledge happens over time…

With each new thing we undertake, we gain knowledge, skills, and the opportunity to apply those things.

And so we are able to lift heavier weight, carry greater responsibility and progressively we work our way up.

How qualification levels work…

The Certificate III is often something that you see in schools. It’s an early vocational part of learning.

Then you go to Certificate IV.

Then a Diploma.

Heavier lifting again, an Advanced Diploma.

Then you can end up at Graduate Diploma level, which is above a Bachelor’s Degree.

Recognition of Prior Learning – Your career is your classroom

You can sit in a classroom to gain the skills and knowledge required to achieve these qualifications… And you can also gain strength through the weight of your career roles.

Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that matches what you’ve done in your career to qualifications.

Which means you may already be eligible for qualifications based on what you know and can do, with no study required.

It’s worth keeping an eye on what level your experience, knowledge and skills are sitting at, and how they stack up against qualifications that benchmark your career strengths.

The team at Churchill is always here to lend a hand.
