Charlotte Lightfoot has built a career across mining, leadership, and business improvement by saying yes to opportunity and backing her experience. After years of working at senior levels without formal recognition, Recognition of Prior Learning gave her something many experienced professionals lack. Proof on paper of what she already knew.

Why RPL:
To formally recognise existing experience without studying what she already knew
From Haul Trucks to Human-Centred Leadership
Charlotte Lightfoot’s career does not follow a straight line. And that is exactly what makes it powerful.
From fast food to finance, real estate to mining, and now into business improvement and organisational development, Charlotte has spent her working life saying yes to opportunity, backing herself, and doing the work.
What she did not have, until recently, was formal recognition for the depth and breadth of experience she had already earned.
That changed when Charlotte completed three nationally recognised qualifications through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) with Churchill Education.
For Charlotte, it was about much more than certificates.
“I’ve had this weight in the back of my head for so long around having all this experience, but nothing to show for it,” she says. “To finally have that recognition is just phenomenal.”
A Career Built on Experience, Not Titles
Charlotte’s working life began at McDonald’s, where she spent eight years progressing from crew member to shift supervisor across multiple locations. From there, she moved into real estate, finance, and branch management, before making a bold pivot into mining.
Charlotte trained as a haul truck operator, driving 400-tonne trucks before moving into office-based roles, including account management, training, HR generalist work, production supervision, and now a Business Improvement Specialist role at a major mining operation.
Across her career, Charlotte has:
- Managed and supported workforces of up to 300 people
- Built and delivered traineeship and training programs
- Written HR policies and procedures from the ground up
- Led workforce planning, change initiatives, and process improvement
- Supported large operational teams through transition and closure planning
Yet despite this experience, one question kept coming up.
“The question was always, ‘Do you have the qualification to go with it?’ And my answer was always no, even though I could prove I’d done the work.”
Why Recognition of Prior Learning Made Sense
Like many experienced professionals, Charlotte had considered formal study many times.
“Even part-time study still expects a certain number of hours every week. I just never had the time to go back and study what I already knew.”
After comparing multiple providers, Churchill stood out.
“It was the easiest process by far. The free assessment made such a difference, and the pricing was genuinely reasonable compared to other places we looked at.”
Charlotte initially planned to complete only the Diploma of Human Resource Management. After submitting her evidence, additional pathways opened.
“I uploaded hundreds of documents and just asked, ‘What do I qualify for?’ And that flexibility made all the difference.”

Three Qualifications, One Clear Direction
Each qualification aligned directly with Charlotte’s real-world experience and future career direction.
“The leadership and organisational development qualifications fit perfectly with what I’m doing now, especially around change management and process improvement.”
The Diploma of Business (Organisational Development) gave Charlotte the language and authority to support work she was already leading.
“Now I can go into projects and say, ‘We need to do this differently,’ and actually be qualified to back that up.”
When the Impact Became Real
Charlotte printed her certificates and displayed them at work.
“My boss stopped and read them and said, ‘Wow, I didn’t realise you could do all of this.’ It opened up more opportunities in my current role.”
Even without changing jobs, the recognition created immediate credibility and confidence.
Leadership That Puts People First
Charlotte’s leadership style is grounded in empathy and action.
When working as a supervisor, she noticed a team member who appeared disengaged and frustrated. Instead of writing it off, she asked why.
“He said he felt like he had all this knowledge and nowhere to pass it on.”
Charlotte helped him step into a trainer role.
“My Superintendent walked past and said, ‘What did you do to Mick? I’ve never seen him smile before.’”
This people-first approach underpins everything Charlotte does.
Paying It Forward
Since completing her RPL, Charlotte has referred multiple colleagues to Churchill.
“We were just really open about it in the office. People overheard us and started asking questions.”
Many of those colleagues have since completed diplomas and advanced diplomas themselves.
“People realised they had years of experience and no qualification to show for it. RPL changed that.”
Looking Ahead
Charlotte is already planning her next qualifications, including WHS and advanced leadership pathways.
“To have something to show for all the effort I’ve put in over the years is incredibly validating.”
And that is exactly what Recognition of Prior Learning is designed to do.
